1) By shaft length

Generally, the word "shaft" refers to the part that covers the leg above the foot.

• Ankle – as the name suggests, these boots usually cover the ankle. They’re the “favorites” in my shoe collection because they are versatile with the rest of the outfit. If you, like me, spend all day running errands but still want to look great, choose a flat sole. You can also use them in more elegant outfits, but it’s better to go for models with heels, which can visually add a few centimeters to your legs.



• Mid-calf – here the shaft reaches the middle of the calf, making them practical for rainy and cold days. A cool style that adds a rebellious vibe, but not my taste, so I don’t have them at home. I’m 1.45 m tall, and these boots make me look even shorter. In my opinion, this length is harder to style with the rest of an outfit. Still, there are a few options that pair well with mid-calf boots. It’s important to balance proportions. Examples:
  1. Loose short dress + long coat.
  2. Choose tights in the same color as the boots to keep leg length.
  3. Hoodie + leggings + mid-calf boots = harmonious look. There are definitely more ideas, so feel free to share yours with me!



• Knee-high – while mid-calf shorten your height, knee-high boots create the opposite effect. They are a classic that elongates the legs and adds almost unreal femininity. They can be flat or with heels, and both options are an absolute “must-have.” Whoever invented them deserves a statue in my yard (hahaha). They pair equally well with dresses, skirts, and trousers in the same color as the boots.



• 👢✨ Over-the-knee – when it comes to femininity, perhaps no other shoe or even clothing item surpasses these boots. This was the only model I could think of as a child. No other shoe made such a strong impression on me. But here lies the greatest chance of making mistakes – from goddess to a girl with no taste at all. In the past, when there was no internet, it was understandable to misuse them, but today, with fashion gurus like me, it’s a “crime” not to style them properly. And before you start hating on me, I’m joking. The classic combination is with short skirts and dresses. Try pairing them with skinny jeans too!
• ⚠️ Mistakes to avoid with over-the-knee – I’m opening a special section here because errors are the most noticeable. As I said above, they pair well with short skirts and dresses. I repeat: SHORT, not TOO SHORT AND TIGHT, because instead of looking sexy and feminine, you’ll look vulgar. These boots don’t like strong contrasts. For example: white tights + black high boots = disaster. If you’re a fan of midi skirts/dresses, give up on these boots because they visually cut and shorten the leg. Wide trousers tucked into boots? No, no, and no again. Don’t experiment – follow the strict rules of high boots. If you’ve chosen a glossy or decorated model, the top should be simpler to avoid an overloaded look. These are the most common mistakes I’ve seen, so ladies, be wise when styling thigh-high boots.



• Thigh-high – these are even taller boots that create daring looks and a truly dramatic effect. They’re popular styles, and if you decide to get a pair, wear them with a tunic, long coats, or mini skirts and dresses. They’re usually made of suede, leather, or another material that doesn’t restrict knee movement.

2) By heel type

• Flat – the most comfortable choice when you have a long walk or a busy day ahead.



• Office look with boots – choose suede boots with a low heel (kitten/low) and slightly below the knee length. They are also very comfortable but with a touch of elegance. Add a short black blazer dress to highlight a professional style. Be careful with the length so you don’t cross the line of appropriateness! This look is suitable if you work in an office with a relaxed dress code. If it feels too provocative, add sheer tights and opt for a more classic dress model.



• Coffee with friends – choose a stable medium heel (block/medium) for a balance between style and practicality. In fact, this outfit could easily fit into the “business look with a more conservative dress code,” but it’s also perfect for a coffee date or dinner with a friend. As seen in the picture above, these boots pair beautifully with a sweater dress in cream/oatmeal shade. Finish the look with a leather belt in the same color as the boots. If it’s cold outside, add nude or dark brown tights.



• Which boots to choose for formal occasions? – high heels will be your strongest weapon here. Needless to say, to pull off this look you should have a flawless figure. This outfit is best suited for younger and shorter women who need extra elongation of the silhouette. Add a short fitted dress with a turtleneck, or a wrap dress with long sleeves, and you’re ready for any occasion that requires a stylish and striking appearance – cocktails, evening events, or elegant dates.



• I want something different – great, here’s a look with platform/wedge boots. A short brown turtleneck dress matches them perfectly. With such shoes, you’ll look modern and confident without sacrificing comfort. They add height and stability – a convenient all-day choice.

3) By style and purpose

• Classic leather – these boots are timeless! If you choose a slightly tailored design without unnecessary decorations, you have a real jewel that matches absolutely everything. Perfect for winter, they add elegance and unbeatable warmth to your feet.



• Suede – the best and most beautiful version after leather. The soft texture adds elegance, luxury, and a slight bohemian vibe. A great choice for fall/winter, but they require special care.



• Riding – originally designed to provide better comfort when riding, these boots quickly became a must-have fashion item. They feature a straight shaft and low heel. They fit snugly to the leg and provide stability and protection.



• Moto/Biker – these boots are characterized by tanned leather and adjustable buckles. They look a bit rougher, but they add that “street” character.



• Western/Cowboy – you can recognize them by their decorative stitching or elaborate embroidery. They have an angled heel and are a super trendy accent in casual outfits.
• Stretch/Sock boots – they fit tightly to the leg; ideal with dresses and skirts.
• Rain boots – waterproof for wet weather; easy to maintain.



• Evening/Party – use this model as a statement piece for special occasions. Choices are wide – patent, satin, metallic, or embellished.



• Summer boots – perhaps you’ve seen those models with many holes, as if someone had shot them. Well, no one did – they’re designed for warm months. These boots are so popular that designers couldn’t resist creating something playful. They’re mostly suited for night outings, but that doesn’t mean you can’t wear them during the day. They pair wonderfully with a short skirt or shorts. They are usually made of lighter, less dense materials so your feet don’t overheat.
• Winter boots – I’m sure you’ll agree this is the best time to wear boots. They will ensure comfort and warmth during the winter months. The third important aspect when choosing winter boots is stability. It’s crucial that the sole doesn’t slip on icy surfaces and provides safety with every step. So don’t ignore these models, even if visually they might not be your favorite. It’s also important to keep your feet dry, so pay attention to materials and whether they allow water through or not.
